Tackling Plastic Pollution with Seabin

Today (June 5th) is World Environment Day, with this year’s event calling for collective action to address plastic pollution.

The seafood industry depends on healthy oceans to produce healthy fish that we can harvest behalf of the community. But unfortunately, plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to marine life.

That’s why, as part of the new Sydney Fish Market development, Sydney Fish Market in partnership with Multiplex and Infrastructure NSW, is proudly supporting the Seabin Smart City Program Sydney, a sustainability initiative tackling marine pollution in the heart of Blackwattle Bay.

Since the program began at the site in 2021, five Seabin units have been operating 24/7 in Blackwattle Bay. In the past year alone, these units have delivered significant environmental outcomes:

  • 1.3 billion litres of water filtered - equal to 521 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

  • 3,468 kilograms of marine litter intercepted

  • Over 1 million plastic items extracted, including more than 639,000 microplastics

These results highlight the impact of proactive, technology-driven approaches to improving water quality and protecting marine ecosystems in urban environments.

How Does a Seabin Work?

A Seabin is a floating rubbish bin that removes pollution from the water’s surface. Each unit uses a submersible pump to draw in up to 1.3 million litres of water per day, skimming the top 10mm of the water column.

As water flows through, the Seabin intercepts plastic waste, microplastics, fibres, oils, and fuel residues in a removable catch bag that holds up to 20 kilograms. Operating 24/7, it provides a simple yet effective solution for cleaner, healthier waterways.
