6 Must-Try Dishes at Sydney Fish Market

If you've visited Sydney Fish Market before, we're willing to bet you ordered one of the classics: some prawns, a tray of oysters, a platter of fish and chips, or some fresh sushi. While these choices are a fantastic way to get a taste for our retailers' delicious offerings, there is so much more to discover.

Read on to learn about six dishes from SFM that you might not know exist... And why you should try them on your next visit!

Fresh Lobster Noodles

Many of our retailers offer a little known service: having your crab or lobster cooked to order. Just choose your specimen from the live tanks, choose your sauce and cooking style, and you'll receive an enormous platter of noodles to enjoy. It doesn't get fresher than that!

Available at The Boatshed Pyrmont, Christies Seafood, Nicholas Seafood, and Peters Sydney Fish Market.

Loaded Oysters

Most Aussies enjoy their oysters natural, meaning they're only adorned with a squeeze of lemon and a crack of pepper at most. But if you're willing to switch it up, many of our retailers offer oysters loaded with any topping you can think of.

There's the classic Kilpatrick and mornay, of course, but they've also got mixed bentos topped with fish roe, sea urchin, seaweed salad, ponzu, tabasco, ginger, and so much more.

We recommend grabbing a mixture of flavours and seeing which you like best!

Available at The Boatshed Pyrmont, Fish Market Cafe, Nicholas Seafood, and Peters Sydney Fish Market.

Grilled Octopus

We've all chomped down on some calamari in our time, but it's much less common to see grilled octopus in your local takeaway. This dish comes in many different variations at SFM, from the Mediterranean occy salad at The Boatshed, to the marinated baby octopus from Fish Market Café, to the aburi skewers from Peters Sydney Fish Market.

If you're feeling extra adventurous, you can even try it as sashimi! Most of our wet fish retailers will have it in stock, and they can slice it up to your liking.

Pipis in XO Sauce

This dish once had Sydney's food scene in a chokehold thanks to the beloved Chinese restaurant Golden Century. Sadly for its devotees, Golden Century has closed... But the good news is that you can still get Pipis in XO at most of our hot food retailers!

Available at The Boatshed Pyrmont, Nicholas Seafood, and Peters Sydney Fish Market.

Soft Shell Crab

When you're creating your own fried seafood platter from the selections in our retailers' hot windows, don't miss adding a couple of Soft Shell Crabs. Fried in a crispy, flavoursome batter, these crabs take away the struggle of painstakingly digging crab meat out of the shell... Just eat it all!

Available at Fish Market Café, Christies Seafood, Nicholas Seafood, and Peters Sydney Fish Market.

Whole Fish

There are many ways to eat whole fish at SFM, and all of them are delicious. Pick a pre-cooked one from the hot window, or choose your own specimen from the wet fish displays and ask to have it cooked to order! You can choose your sauce from a range of options – including XO! – and pick whether you want it grilled, baked, steamed, or deep-fried.

This is a great one to order if you're with a big group, as everyone can dig in together.

Pre-cooked whole fish are available at Fish Market Café, and cooked-to-order is available at Christie's Seafood, Nicholas Seafood, and Peters Sydney Fish Market. The Boatshed Pyrmont also has a whole fish on their menu.
