Seafood Extender Program – Spirit Level Special Performance

Ahead of the Seafood Extender Performance Program by NSW Government, which will officially kick off in May 2026 – Spirit Level will grace the Civic Plaza for a special performance, flooding Sydney Fish Market with dance and sound.

Emerging from the crowd and meshing with the everyday, the performance blurs the real and the imagined, severing perceptions, disrupting everyday behaviour, with exaggerated actions such as extended movement whilst toting a bag full of wiggling toy fish, and the sonic amplification of water as it is played in a drum filled with aquatic liquid.

Spirit Level draws attention to the immediate environment, the continuous bustle of human connection and the experience of a busy market on the harbour. The relationship to site, as a vibrant sensory-rich environment working with essence and atmosphere is manifested through the energies of the performance.

Tina Havelock Stevens and Jo Lloyd will morph through varying states. This exploration will also be revealed in their modes of performance, Jo dances, Tina drums, but not always. There is a continuous quest to find balance between equally weighted extremes. The spirit level of our senses will teeter on the humorous.
