Short Film Premiere: Sharing the Humpback Highway
Be among the first to experience a special short film screening inside the Auction Hall at the new Sydney Fish Market – a rare opportunity to step into the heart of Australia’s seafood industry for an insightful event.
Each winter, more than 50,000 Humpback whales migrate along Australia’s east coast in one of the world’s great wildlife spectacles – a remarkable conservation success story decades in the making. But their return also brings new challenges for the people who make their living on the water.
Sharing the Humpback Highway offers an honest and human look at NSW commercial fishers navigating whale migration season and the increasing risk of entanglement. The film highlights practical gear modifications trialled through OceanWatch Australia’s Whale Entanglement Mitigation Program, showcasing the steps fishers are taking to reduce risks for whales while supporting the long-term future of their industry.
Through on-water stories, industry insight and a shared commitment to ocean stewardship, this documentary celebrates the collaboration and innovation helping create safer passage for both whales and fishers.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and representatives from OceanWatch Australia.
