Qantas Future Planet Partnership

SFM has partnered with Qantas to participate in the Qantas Future Planet program to establish itself as a leader in the Australian seafood industry in achieving carbon neutral status.

SFM was inspired to achieve carbon neutrality after a group of industry representatives participating in the 2017 National Seafood Industry Leadership Program presented their vision for a carbon neutral seafood industry in Australia by the year 2030.

By joining the Qantas Future Planet offset program, SFM becomes Australia’s second seafood industry organisation to become carbon neutral – following the lead of Austral Fisheries who achieved carbon neutral status in 2016.

Qantas Future Planet is the largest airline offset program in the world and involves working with other sustainably minded corporate partners to reduce environmental impacts and offset carbon emissions through globally accredited projects.

SFM has opted to invest in a carbon offset project that is helping improve the health of the Great Barrier Reef. The project is regenerating and replanting areas of native rainforest along creeks and rivers, preventing pollutants from flowing into the Reef’s waters.

SFM will also contribute to offset projects in the North Kimberley that are improving the health of the land and helping prevent uncontrolled wildfires. Through the projects, Indigenous rangers use Right Way fire – cool fire that burns slowly and is not destructive like wildfire – to prevent uncontrolled wildfires and avoid the associated release of carbon emissions.

SFM and Qantas have committed to forming an advisory group to progress the development of blue carbon projects. Currently there are no certified blue carbon projects in Australia, however their establishment would see improved fish habitat through the regeneration of mangroves, wetlands and estuaries.

Improving Safety in the Commercial Fishing Industry Survey

The FRDC, Dr Kate Brooks and a small team of researchers are working to identify factors that could contribute to improvements in safe work practices for the commercial fishing industry.

The results of the research will provide greater insight for fishers, industry associations and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in how to improve safety outcomes through changes in attitudes, behaviour and culture in the sector.

If you work in the fishing industry, we encourage you to take part in the survey HERE and share a story (confidentiality is guaranteed).

The survey takes 15-25 minutes to complete. All completed surveys will be entered into the draw to win a personal flotation device (PFD). One PFD is drawn every 10 days between now and when the survey closes at the end of June.

Together we can all support the efforts towards creating safer work environments throughout the fishing industry.

National Seafood Industry Leadership Program

Seventeen people from across the seafood industry came together over six months for the 2017 National Seafood Industry Leadership Program (NSILP) and worked on achieving a vision for the group to unify and empower the seafood community through promoting sustainable growth of the seafood industry.

SFM’s Lief Hendrikz was part of a team of seven people in the Blue Unity team who were looking into habitat restoration as a way to sustainably grow the industry. Through reading about carbon offsetting by Austral Fisheries in the FRDC Fish magazine, the group became interested in whether fish habitat restoration could be funded by companies wishing to offset their carbon footprint through blue carbon initiatives.

At the conclusion of the program, the Blue Unity team met up for a trip on the FV Wildcard to the Wessel Islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria.  The group are determined to continue their work beyond NSILP and the trip provided them with an opportunity to discuss the next steps for their project.

For 2018 the intake has increased and two rounds of programs have been scheduled. Under the guidance of an expanded facilitator team, the first intake commenced in March and the following intake will begin their program in May.

Congratulations to SFM’s Stephen Masters as well as Joshua Cook from Coffs Harbour Fishermen's Co-operative and Andrew Bollinger a fisher from Newcastle who were awarded SFM sponsored positions to participate in the 2018 program.  We wish you well in your training.

Chinese New Year Night Market

On Friday 16th February SFM held its first ever Chinese New Year Night Market.  Trading hours were extended to 10pm to allow Sydneysiders the rare opportunity to experience SFM at night.

A traditional lion dance troupe paraded across the site from 5.30pm to 6.30pm collecting red envelopes from the retailers and bestowing prosperity and luck for the year ahead.  SFM staff handed out gold chocolate coins, red envelopes and SFM fish-pun fortune cookies throughout the performance.

The event received a large amount of local and international media coverage and was heavily promoted by City of Sydney as part of their city-wide celebrations which helped contribute to the visitor attendance of over 7,000 people.

Sydney Fish Market Ferry

A new ferry service has launched between Sydney Fish Market and King Street Wharf One, Barangaroo.

The service commenced on 24th March and operates on weekends, every 30 minutes, between 9:00am and 5:00pm.

SFM have been advocating for a ferry service to the site for quite some time and are thrilled that visitors will now have a scenic and convenient travel option.

It is hoped that the service will also help reduce traffic in and around SFM by offering another transport alternative to cars whilst complementing the existing public transport options.

Launch of Mandarin-language Classes at Sydney Seafood School

To coincide with Chinese New Year, Sydney Seafood School (SSS) launched the addition of Mandarin-language classes to the cooking class program.

The launch of the inaugural Mandarin-language class was held Friday 23rd February in partnership with Union Pay. Under the instruction of Muriel Chen, owner of Pyrmont’s Blue Eye Dragon restaurant, guests were treated to a hands-on cooking experience preparing Great Australian Seafood BBQ dishes followed by a sit-down dinner with wine.

The guest list of nearly 60 people included attendees from Business Events Sydney, Destination NSW, Chinese tour companies and media, Union Pay and more.

Redevelopment Update

Sydney Fish Market continues to work closely with UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation, world renowned Danish architects 3XN, and its stakeholders to create a shared vision for a renewed and expanded market on Sydney Harbour.

Featuring endorsements from leaders in the Australian tourism industry, a video has been developed to provide an update on how the project is progressing and further details on the vision for the new market at the end of Blackwattle Bay.

The video features endorsements by John O’Sullivan, Managing Director – Tourism Australia and Margy Osmond, Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism & Transport Forum Australia (TTF) on why they think a new Sydney Fish Market is so important not only for the seafood industry but also for tourism in Australia.

Seafood Industry Australia Video Masterclass

On Tuesday 17th April SFM welcomed guests of Seafood Industry Australia (SIA) from across the Australian seafood industry for a video masterclass hosted by Lynsee Fowler from the National Fisheries Institute (NFI) in Washington, D.C., USA. Lynsee is the communications manager for NFI and has produced nearly 500 videos for NFI in five years.

The masterclass taught attendees how to put together a simple yet effective video from scratch and shared best practices tips on general structure that works across many different fields and audiences.

The masterclass commenced with a tour of SFM auction hosted by Stephanie Williams followed by the video session and a photography workshop with Jessica McInerney from SIA.

SFM Plastic Neutral Plan

SFM has developed a plan to become a plastic neutral organisation by December 2020 by overhauling its approach to plastic use and waste management across the organisation, operations and site practices.

The first stages of the strategy have commenced which involves the implementation of expanded recycling services in the office and staff awareness sessions to help staff adapt to new procedures.

The final goal is for the entire SFM site to be free of single use plastic and become accredited as a plastic neutral organisation by the 2020 target year.

It is hoped that a secondary outcome for SFM’s initiative will be to create awareness with local and international visitors and encourage change within the industry towards plastic use.

RIP Diego Bagnato

SFM is saddened to report the death of Diego Bagnato. Diego was the first Bagnato of the SFM fleet to leave Italy in search of adventure in Australia, departing his homeland by boat on April 19, 1957.

As the first child of the man considered to be the founding father of the Australian Bagnatos, also named Diego, and his wife Domenica, young Diego was born into a traditional Italian fishing family, with the practice at the core of family life.

At the time of his emigration, aged 29, Diego already had extensive experience at sea having first skippered his father’s trawlers in Calabria during World War II at the age of just 14.

Two years later, Diego purchased his first vessel, the Isabella Star, with his brothers Giuseppe and Vincenzo. Driven by Diego’s vision to build his own boat, the brothers sold the Isabella Star three years later and Diego went into business again with his brother Vincenzo.  The two pooled their money and built the Immacolata Prima from scratch in Glebe, near where the Anzac Bridge is situated today.

In 1964, the Immacolata Prima was the first trawler to unload its catch at the opening of the government owned Fish Marketing Authority.

Diego later went into partnership with Antonio when they purchased the Kirrawa. In 1968, the Immacolata Prima was sold and Diego bought his first solely-owned vessel, the Arakiwa. In 1992 Diego purchased a second trawler, the Francesca.

The Arakiwa was sold in 1996, as was the Francesca in 2002. In 2008, the Kirrawa returned back to Diego's family and was purchased by his son, Vince, and son in law, Giovanni Tripodi.

A procession was held at SFM on the 11th of April for family and friends of Diego.

Staff News

Congratulations Louise Morrison

SFM would like to congratulate Louise Morrison on completing two years of post-graduate study to become a certified human resources practitioner. Louise received her qualification through the Australian HR Institute which is the national association representing human resource and people management professionals.

Welcome Jay Croke

SFM welcomed Jay Croke to the auction day shift team in late January. Jay has experience in seafood handling and distribution having worked previously in storeman and forklift driver roles at PFD Food Services and Paulos Bros Seafoods.

Welcome Steven Cattel

Originally from South Coast NSW, Stevel Cattel joined SFM’s night shift in early February. Steven left his job at Nowra Fresh Fish & Meat to pursue bigger opportunities in Sydney and has been commended for the enthusiasm he has demonstrated since commencing at SFM.
